
On 31 October 2012 the Cosmetic Products (Safety)(Amendment) Regulations 2012 came into force.
These regulations created specific conditions and offences in relation to Tooth Whitening compounds and treatments.
- Tooth Whitening Compounds containing or releasing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide may only be sold to dental practitioners.
- The maximum permitted level of hydrogen peroxide is 6%.
- The first treatment of any course can only be administered by a dental practitioner. After the first treatment the remainder of the course may by completed by the patient.
- Tooth Whitening Compounds containing or releasing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide must not be used on a person under 18 years of age.
