The Responsible Tobacco Retailing Programme has been established by the UK tobacco industry to support independent community retailers to prevent youth access to tobacco. The scheme is being gradually rolled out across the UK, managed by independent specialists at Under Age Sales Ltd. The roll out will be completed by the end of 2017, by which time 1-in-5 tobacco retailers will be tested each year - around 10,000 premises a year. The latest Annual Report (PDF,4.8MB) of activity was published on 7th July 2016.
Retailers are selected at random to be subject to a mystery shopping compliance check. These are carried out by Serve Legal who specialise in these checks. They will send each retailer a report which will highlight if they are 'compliant' or 'at risk'. Those that are 'at risk' will be retested and, if they remain 'at risk' provided with free compliance support.
The scheme is FREE-OF-CHARGE to retailers.
The compliance support is provided by specialist compliance advisors from Under Age Sales Ltd. You can find out more about them on this website.
