July marks the ten year ban of indoor smoking in public places. Whilst ten years isnít a long time when you consider cigarettes have been prevalent in the UK for over 450 years, a lot of legislation has been passed to discourage young and old alike, to stop smoking.

Our Australian neighbours are often known for their laid-back attitude, however when it comes to the underage use of alcohol and cigarettes, they put the British to shame. Recent surveys from both countries have shown that the UK has a long way to go in reducing the amount of under 16s that engage in drinking alcohol and smoking.

New research carried out by Under Age Sales, the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) and the National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) has revealed that almost 6000 convenience store workers experience verbal or physical abuse every single day as a direct result of asking customers for identification to purchase age restricted products.

On Wednesday 15th February, Under Age Sales attended the Retail Crime seminar held at the Scottish Grocersí Federation. It was here that we launched a first-of-its-kind qualification to Scottish retailers Ė the Award in Preventing Under Age Sales in Scotland.
